Hello, Friends and Newcomers!

This week’s blog post will be a little recap of the last month at Dance By Design Studio to give you a glimpse into our studio life.

Our first month of dance classes was nothing short of amazing! We hosted our FIRST-ever Open House event at the beginning of the month where we had the joy of fellowshipping with new and familiar faces alike. For that event, we followed our Monday night schedule to give parents and students the chance to see what an evening with Dance By Design would look like. Students took Acro with Miss Mykah, Beginner/Intermediate Jazz with Miss Mykah, Intermediate/Advanced Ballet with yours truly, and Beginner/Intermediate Ballet also with little old me. Seeing as this was my first time organizing and hosting an open house and everyone left smiling and sweating, I am calling it a success. I want to offer a BIG thank you to all the parents who graciously helped with this event and to all the Dance By Design students for putting their best foot forward.

I will proudly shout from the highest peaks of this platform that Dance By Design students came to WORK as we entered our first official week of classes. Students have already shown great improvement in flexibility and technique. I’m one proud dance teacher, that’s for sure!

Between all of the kids in the Dance By Design Company program, we are already working on a total of five dances. But I won’t spoil what those dances are by writing about them here! You’ll have to see them live by attending one of the many events the students are performing at. Dance By Design will be attending the Fort Worth Dance Festival in October where audience members will be able to watch three of our new dance pieces. You won’t want to miss it. If you are unfamiliar with the Fort Worth Dance Festival, here is the link to their website where you can read more about it:

We are also so PROUD to share that several students attended the Ballet Frontier Nutcracker audition this month! Auditions for young dancers can often be intimidating and nerve-wracking. It is a big step for any dancer to start attending auditions regularly and work on skills such as professionalism, discipline, confidence, taking ownership of preparation, warm-up delivery, and even the skill of processing rejection. Auditioning helps students refine their technique, artistry, and character. Auditioning is also a part of the professional dance industry, and something dancers should familiarize themselves with early on so they are prepared for their future dance career. These are all the many reasons why Dance By Design Studio encourages its students to explore and understand the world of auditioning when they’re with us.

In September, I plan to focus on upper body control, strength, and flexibility, nutrition for dancers, and dance history. I will introduce new exercises, activities, and discussions to help facilitate learning about these concepts/topics. I hope to post several times in September, so check back soon to find helpful resources and information on these topics.

Welcome to the Dance By Design Blog!

I am beyond excited to introduce all of you to an idea that has been on my heart for many years!

This blog was born from a desire to offer dance educators, professionals, and enthusiasts a place where they can find helpful, FREE resources and information regarding teaching/dance education, fine arts advocacy, and dance studio management. I am hoping it will become so much more than that.

The concept for this blog developed during my time as an undergrad student in the Journalism department at the University of Texas at Arlington (don’t come at me if I misspell something, lol). I wanted to use the skills I was gaining from that program to benefit the dance community at large. Furthermore, I recently started my own dance training and performing company for students of all ages in Arlington, Texas, and decided this blog would also be an excellent place for me to share updates and stories that come out of the Dance By Design companies.

In the future you can expect posts to focus on: dance education tips and activities; interviews with industry professionals; resources for fine arts advocacy; dance studio management tips and strategies; and photos and updates that empower and celebrate my very own students from the Dance By Design companies.

I aim to create a supportive culture that values empowerment, professionalism, and transparency.

I believe it is through connection and conversation that we will bring desired changes to communities. I would love to live in a world where dance is accessible to all individuals and this blog will hopefully be a step in that direction. There are so many caring and powerful voices in the dance industry that deserve to be heard. This blog is a platform that will proudly promote the lived experiences of individuals, groups, and organizations who work in the dance industry or whose work impacts it. I believe in unveiling the less visible narratives of those whose practices and perspectives may be unknown as to continue the generation and circulation of ideas.
